This little sable guy is Bacchus…he is named after the Mardi Gras parade (which was named after the Greek god of wine & spirits) since he was rescued the day before Mardi Gras started. He is 1 to 2 years old and he needs a furever home. Bacchus is being fostered in a home with 3 children, ages 2, 9 & 10. He has done very well with the children and loves to be with them. He is still young enough to want to chew a lot so it is very important that if his new home has children they are old enough to know to keep toys out of Bacchus’ space and that his owners provide him lots of doggie toys & things for chewing on. He has not been destructive, but would be if this were not provided for. Bacchus LOVES to go for walks and will even walk beside you while he helps carry his own leash…it is very cute! He likes to play fetch though doesn’t always want to give whatever was fetched back without a bit of playing tug first. He gets along really well with his foster fur-brother, a beagle, and doesn’t chase the cats in the family. Bacchus will come when called and while he isn’t crazy about going into a crate he will do so if coaxed and is fine once he is in there. He is housetrained when on a schedule and let out often, but has that cocker trait of excitement tinkling when meeting new people or his family when they come home from being gone. With most cockers that does go away as they get older and feel more confident and secure, but not always so we can’t promise it will. Two tricks that can help with this are 1. Not bending right over the dog…squat down a few steps in front of the dog and call him to you. It is less intimidating. And 2, don’t talk in a high “squeaky” voice to him…using a lower tone of voice creates less excitement and is more calming. That and giving him a lot of self-esteem and praise will help him settle in and go a long way toward stopping that habit. |
